Pavel Maurer and brewer Václav Berka made a bet about how much beer would be served at the Prague Food Festival

23.5.2011 Pilsner Urquell

The great attention being paid to beer gastronomy led to a bet between the organiser of this event, Pavel Maurer, and the Senior Business Brewer from Plzeňský Prazdroj, Václav Berka, about how much beer will be drunk at this year’s Prague Food Festival. Václav Berka believes that more than 11,000 beers will be drunk, while Pavel Maurer states that it won’t be more than 10,700 beers. The loser will pay for his loss at the Pilsner Fest in Plzeň, in August – where either Pavel Maurer will serve beer to visitors or Václav Berka will cook for him.

Good food always has the right partner in a good drink. The tasting programme Pairing Beer with Food (which takes place in Míčovna) will present to visitors not only the portfolio of beers from Plzeňský Prazdroj, but will also showcase other beer categories which aren’t readily available on the Czech market, which of course belong to the gallery of beers from around the world. Václav Berka, Senior Business Brewer from Plzeňský Prazdroj, will recommend some combinations of dishes with different brands. All pairings were put together by the best Czech chefs.

Restaurant Lokál U bílé kuželky at Malá Strana (in stands 13 and 14) will showcase a menu which is ideal for being married with the Pilsner Urquell lager or with one of the three special Master beers. In addition to main courses, the pairings of food with beer at Lokál also feature appetizers and dessert. Each is supported by flavours from one of the premium beers.

Visitors to the Prague Food Festival can enter the School for Serving Beer from Tap, Master Bartender (stand 24). Under the supervision of Lukáš Svoboda, the reigning World Champion in serving beer from tap, who will watch over various styles of serving beer and will share his comments and observations, they can each become skilled in serving Pilsner beer. They thus have the opportunity to be granted the title „Student Bartender Pilsner Urquell Prague Food Festival 2011.“

Special Master beers deserve a unique serving ritual, which anybody can experience at stand 17. The special beer will also be part of the end of the Prague Food Festival for all visitors – before leaving, each person will receive a present, a combination of all three Master beers: Master 15° Gold, Master 13° Amber and Master 18° Dark.
